5.Attitude vs Skills
What is more important to an organization.. Skills or Attitudes..?
It's only natural that when it's time to hire a new employee, you'll want your ideal applicant to have the appropriate combination of talent, attitude, and experience. However, finding someone who "has it all" is difficult, and you may be forced to choose between someone with the proper attitude and someone with the correct skill. But how do you make a decision?
Recruitment agencies and human resource managers all across the world are familiar with the skill vs. attitude debate. Let's examine the differences between the two and see if one is superior to the other.
A person's talent is referred to as a skill. The manner a person uses her or his skills to finish the work is defined by her or his attitude. This determines how you will react to anything that comes your way. Attitude is more of a skill than a trait.
Because the recruiting process can be draining, it's critical to arm yourself with as much information as possible about the candidate(s) before making a final selection.
Is a positive individual with a can-do attitude and limited talents, on the other hand, a better choice than someone who is highly talented but lacks motivation?
SKILLS CAN BE LEARNED, BUT ATTITUDE CANNOT.
The notion that it is better to hire for attitude derives from the belief that people who are enthusiastic and adaptable may quickly learn new abilities. The improper attitude, on the other hand (for example, indifference, negativity, resistance to change, and pessimism) is considerably more difficult to change since the person must want to change, which is impossible without the right attitude!
THE RIGHT COMBINATION OF SKILL AND ATTITUDE
Of course, you may come across applicants that are both talented and have a positive attitude. If that's the case, you've discovered a winning combo! Finally, if you must pick between attitude and skill, think about what is most important to your company. If you want to focus on attitude rather than technical skills during the interview, you'll need to ask the correct questions.
IN AN INTERVIEW, HOW TO TEST ATTITUDE
Assessing someone's skill level is much easier than determining their attitude. In an interview, most people will bring their "A" game and do their best to impress. However, there are a few questions you may ask to determine whether or not they have the correct mindset.
Consider asking some or all of the following questions:
- Their former job and the reasons for their departure
- Previous challenges they have faced and how they overcame them
- How they handle failure
- What they do when confronted with situations that are beyond their capabilities
